re-Activists angry as Iowa lawmakers become first to OK bill to discourage undercover farm videos

By Associated Press, Published: March 1
DES MOINES, Iowa — Animal welfare groups reacted with outrage Wednesday after the Iowa Legislature made the state the first to approve a bill making it a crime to surreptitiously get into a farming operation to record video of animal abuse.

The groups have urged Gov. Terry Branstad to veto the measure that was overwhelmingly approved Tuesday by the Iowa House and Senate, arguing that the measure would prevent people from publicizing animal abuse.

Greeting Washington Post et al,

your new comment policy is too burdensome to bother responding to the comment section, but I thought this important enough to send directly to you. please use as you wish.

IN reply to the Iowa lawmakers and their bill to discourage farm videos, is just another nail in another coffin, for some other poor soul that eats tainted products.

PLEASE understand this very carefully, the largest meat recall in history (at the time), was documented because of filming and video. IF not for that and the HSUS, we would have NEVER KNOWN, that children all across the Nation, from school to school, were fed the most high risk cattle for mad cow disease i.e. dead stock downer cows, VIA THE USDA AND THE NSLP. THIS IS FACT! now all this was hidden under the guise of _animal abuse_, when if fact, it was child abuse. since when do you have the largest meat recall in the USA history, because a few animals were abused? nope, fact was, our Children all across the Nation were exposed to mad cow disease via the USDA and the NSLP. now, the USDA et al will lay claim to nothing but lies, that the USA does not have mad cow disease, then they will lie about the mad cow feed ban, and then lie some more about the mad cow surveillance program, all this PROVEN FACTS, that both failed terribly. proven by the GAO and OIG, time and time again.

DID YOUR CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN EAT MAD COW EXPOSED BEEF VIA THE USDA AND NSLP ???

IF SO, WHO WILL WATCH OVER THEM FOR THE NEXT 50 YEARS WAITING FOR CJD ???

DON’T THINK MAD COW DISEASE IS HERE IN THE USA ???

think again. North America has c-BSE, h-BSE, l-BSE, typical scrapie’s, and atypical Nor-98 scrapie, TWO STRAINS OF CWD IN DEER AND ELK, and TME. nobody is looking at cats and dogs, both of which are capable of having TSE prion disease.

Still don’t believe me?

see for yourself, and look at the official recall of said downer cattle meat from school to school, and see if your child was exposed to dead stock downer cows, the most high risk for mad cow disease. ...

> > > Ackerman says downed cattle are 50 times more likely to have mad cow disease (also known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, or BSE) than ambulatory cattle that are suspected of having BSE. Of the 20 confirmed cases of mad cow disease in North America since 1993, at least 16 have involved downer cattle, he said. < < <

don’t forget the children...

PLEASE be aware, for 4 years, the USDA fed our children all across the Nation (including TEXAS) dead stock downer cows, the most high risk cattle for BSE aka mad cow disease and other dangerous pathogens. who will watch our children for CJD for the next 5+ decades ???

WAS your child exposed to mad cow disease via the NSLP ???

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM FROM DOWNER CATTLE UPDATE

http://downercattle.blogspot.com/2009/05/who-will-watch-children.html

Approximately 50.3 million pounds of the beef recalled by HallmarkNVestland went to federal nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program, and of those 50.3 million pounds, about 19.6 million pounds had already been consumed at the time the recall was issued. Release No. 0054.08, USDA, Transcript of Technical Briefing - HallmarldWestland Meat Packing Company (Feb. 21, 2008).

9. HSUS members that consume meat products, including beef products, are concerned about eating adulterated meat products and the health risks associated with such adulterated meat. Specifically, they are concerned that downed cattle are at an increased risk for harboring and transmitting BSE prions and other pathogens. The consumption of meat products derived from BSE-infected cattle is believed to cause a human neurological disease known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease ("vCJD"). The disease is progressive, invariably fatal, and there is no known effective treatment or cure. Downed cattle may also be at higher risk for harboring other foodborne transmissible pathogens, including E. coli 0157:H7, Salmonella, and anthrax. By allowing downed cattle to enter the food supply, USDA's regulatory loophole injures members of The HSUS by placing them at an increased risk of contracting these food-borne illnesses each time they eat beef.

10. Members of The HSUS are also concerned about the meat products provided to their children through the National School Lunch Program. More than 31 million school children receive lunches through the program each school day. To assist states in providing healthful, low-cost or free meals, USDA provides states with various commodities including ground beef. As evidenced by the HallmarkNVestland investigation and recall, the potential for downed animals to make their way into the National School Lunch Program is neither speculative nor hypothetical.

35. As described in paragraphs 21-22, BSE is a TSE, a species of disease characterized by the debilitating neurological impacts they have on their victims. The incubation period for this class of diseases in humans can be long, with the interim between eating contaminated meat and developing symptoms potentially extending for decades. Therefore, the full impact that the consumption of Hallmark/Westland beef has had on consumers, including Plaintiffs members' children in the National School Lunch Program, may not be known for many years.

Seven main threats for the future linked to prions

First threat The TSE road map defining the evolution of European policy for protection against prion diseases is based on a certain numbers of hypotheses some of which may turn out to be erroneous. In particular, a form of BSE (called atypical Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy), recently identified by systematic testing in aged cattle without clinical signs, may be the origin of classical BSE and thus potentially constitute a reservoir, which may be impossible to eradicate if a sporadic origin is confirmed.

***Also, a link is suspected between atypical BSE and some apparently sporadic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans. These atypical BSE cases constitute an unforeseen first threat that could sharply modify the European approach to prion diseases.

The European Response to BSE: A Success Story

snip...

EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) recently delivered a scientific opinion on any possible epidemiological or molecular association between TSEs in animals and humans (EFSA Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) and ECDC, 2011). This opinion confirmed Classical BSE prions as the only TSE agents demonstrated to be zoonotic so far but the possibility that a small proportion of human cases so far classified as "sporadic" CJD are of zoonotic origin could not be excluded. Moreover, transmission experiments to non-human primates suggest that some TSE agents in addition to Classical BSE prions in cattle (namely L-type Atypical BSE, Classical BSE in sheep, transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) and chronic wasting disease (CWD) agents) might have zoonotic potential.

thing about hvCJD, it matches right nicely with atypical BSE subtype, and atypical Scrapie subtype (both documented in North America), just like nvCJD did in the UK with typical c-BSE. bbbut, the USA does not have mad cow disease or human variant there from $ now, how long did the feds cover up tobacco and asbestos ? about 100 years.

the British disease, is now a North American disease, just different strain. my mom did everything linda blair did in the movie THE Exorsist, except spin here head 360 degrees. the jerks i.e. myoclonus, were so bad, she actually levitated in bed, where it took three adults to hold her down. luckily, her strain of CJD was a very fast, exceedingly rare strain of sporadic CJD, with clinical symptoms lasting about 2 to 3 months. with the nvCJD, it’s very long clinical disease, and with Alzheimer’s, even longer. but it was so violent. I don’t normally like to rehash this, it was very disturbing and profound, images burnt into your brain that you never forget. I am not trying to bring pity here, I am just trying to show you the facts as I have come to know them. take them with however many grains of salt you wish, but please take them seriously. this is a fairly old video, lot of new science out since then, but this will give some of you wishing to know, a better view of what we are dealing with ;

WARNING, this is a very disturbing video. over a decade old.

2010-2011

When L-type BSE was inoculated into ovine transgenic mice and Syrian hamster the resulting molecular fingerprint had changed, either in the first or a subsequent passage, from L-type into C-type BSE. In addition, non-human primates are specifically susceptible for atypical BSE as demonstrated by an approximately 50% shortened incubation time for L-type BSE as compared to C-type. Considering the current scientific information available, it cannot be assumed that these different BSE types pose the same human health risks as C-type BSE or that these risks are mitigated by the same protective measures.

This study will contribute to a correct definition of specified risk material (SRM) in atypical BSE. The incumbent of this position will develop new and transfer existing, ultra-sensitive methods for the detection of atypical BSE in tissue of experimentally infected cattle.

Long-term effects of CWD on cervid populations and ecosystems remain unclear as the disease continues to spread and prevalence increases. In captive herds, CWD might persist at high levels and lead to complete herd destruction in the absence of human culling. Epidemiologic modeling suggests the disease could have severe effects on free-ranging deer populations, depending on hunting policies and environmental persistence (8,9). CWD has been associated with large decreases in free-ranging mule deer populations in an area of high CWD prevalence (Boulder, Colorado, USA) (5).

CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE CWD WISCONSIN Almond Deer (Buckhorn Flats) Farm Update DECEMBER 2011

> > > The CWD infection rate was nearly 80%, the highest ever in a North American captive herd.

Despite the five year premise plan and site decontamination, The WI DNR has concerns over the bioavailability of infectious prions at this site to wild white-tail deer should these fences be removed. Current research indicates that prions can persist in soil for a minimum of 3 years.

However, Georgsson et al. (2006) concluded that prions that produced scrapie disease in sheep remained bioavailable and infectious for at least 16 years in natural Icelandic environments, most likely in contaminated soil.

Additionally, the authors reported that from 1978-2004, scrapie recurred on 33 sheep farms, of which 9 recurrences occurred 14-21 years after initial culling and subsequent restocking efforts; these findings further emphasize the effect of environmental contamination on sustaining TSE infectivity and that long-term persistence of prions in soils may be substantially greater than previously thought. < < <
